WHY SHOULD COMPANIES HIRE INTERNATIONAL INTERNS?

  1. Waves of internationalization in Vietnam

30 years ago, Vietnam was ranked among the poorest countries in the world. It was not until the late 1980s that Vietnam economy turned open for foreign investments - it is the benchmark for the process of internationalization in Vietnam, known as “Doi Moi” period with several changes in political and economic policies. The period mid-1990s witnessed the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US, which was followed by Vietnam being part of ASEAN and WTO. Vietnam signed a fairly comprehensive bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States in 2000, which came into force in 2001. The BTA was part of the post-war "trade normalisation" process between the two countries and should be seen as strong precursor to a watertight US FTA.  These days, Vietnam is among the most dynamic economies in the region and an inviting destination for foreign investment community, which requires companies to compete domestically and internationally.  Freer flows of goods, services and labor are promising but also demanding in the sense that companies now have to bring cultural competency to their staff and workplace.

In corporate levels, hiring international students working in your companies is an affordable and useful means of bringing multicultural working environment to your companies.

  1. Creativity, Conflict Resolution and Market Development

The diversity in the work environment would drive debates, discoveries, creativity, and most important, ideas. The reason is that different cultures have different ways of looking into a problem and thus, come up with different solutions. A pool of ideas is what people look for, work for and will gain after all in an international working environment.

Our international students can also facilitate market development, interns can also improve on product competitiveness and create the access to the targeted market. In other words, they can be potential customers, or even enlarge the companies’ networking to international market. This scheme is applicable to any industries,  from tourism, hospitality, agriculture production to software outsourcing, etc. The prospects of having international interns are worthwhile.

The interns' research helps us clarify more about the standard requirement relevant to some issues. Their work also contributes to helping us clarify many things that we have not understood or confused, as well as through her we have a new perspective on what we are doing.

GreenViet

Environmental Engineering Internship Host ,Danang, Vietnam

I worked with Ain, an environmental sciences student from Singapore for 5 months. Ain had left a lasting impression on our team, standing out for her work ethics and friendliness. She never missed a deadline and always asked for more ways she can help. During her time, she had contributed to 2 of our projects working on efficient and affordable ways to collect floating trash in the coastal area of Northern Vietnam. She also joined our onsite trip to Nam Dinh to conduct experiments and surveys with local fishermen. I can see she is passionate about the environment and hope we can work together in the future as she further her career in conservation.

The girl did the internship is still young and inexperienced, but she learned very fast. She took time to reflect on herself and managed to stay calm during crisis. We learned a lot about how to strengthen the program and help the students have a better experience. We also learned how to deal with cultural differences, as well as manage expectations. We got the chance to exchange different points of views and different working protocols. lso learned how to deal with cultural differences, as well as manage expectations. TAN TAO UNIVERSITY

Neurology Research Internship Host ,Long An Province, Vietnam

We hosted 3 Singaporean students in our testing lab. Their main tasks are helping with our lab services team, conducting experiments on food, air and water samples. We also helped in one of our research with literature review. Since only part of our team speak English, there was a language barrier, but the students manage to overcome through body languages and Google Translation. They also bonded with our staff by going for lunch together. Overall, they are good students and we hope there will be more such collaborations in the future.

HANOI UNIVERSITY OF PUBLIC HEALTH

Pharmacy & Biology Internship Host ,Hanoi, Vietnam

We hosted 2 pharmacy polytechnic students from Singapore for 5 months. At first, we did not expect much since they are only year 3 but their performances surprisingly exceeded our expectations. Despite the differences in Vietnam’s medications types and labeling systems to what they were taught in Singapore, their proactiveness and work ethics were able to triumph. They became a major part in our Outpatient unit, performing Picking & Packing, Inventory Management, Transfer of Medications, Dispensing & Counselling. Later on, they also took part in our Inpatients Unit, helping with medications picking for inpatients, and Compounding Unit, helping compounders with materials distilling and equipment preparations. By the end, we were happy with our performances enough that we had them join in our group description discussions and counseling with foreign outpatients. We are confident that they will become good pharmacist in the future.

VinMec International Hospital

Pharmacy Internship Host ,Hanoi, Vietnam

We have received interns from ABROADER twice since last 2019. Thanks to the students, we could systemize our structure and training documentation. Right now, event management is a growing industry with not many real institutes so the staff might not be 100% trained to their potential. However, these Singaporean interns help us with understand what course of actions should be taken. Even though some students seemed stress at first and became passive, we tried to give them some encouragement and support from all of our team. They've become better and start to progress profoundly. Some designer interns weren't best with their English while we only know English as our main foreign communication, we still managed to break the language barrier together. Moreover, that the interns speak Chinese helped us do business with many Chinese customers.

The interns were splendid that demonstrate high quality assistance with fresh perspective that help our business to understand more about foreign culture and working styles. They also exhibit good data collection and analytical skills that we see as professional. Digipencil MVV

Digital Media & Graphic Design Internship Host ,HCMC, Vietnam

We hosted 1 bio-med student from Singapore for 5 months. Since our research areas are mostly high-level stem cell research, we normally recruited master or PhD students. Since Adriel is still an undergrad, at first there was a lack of background knowledge and we needed to give him a lot of additional readings. Adriel was very hard working, actively educating himself by taking online classes and seminars. By the second month, he was able to join our research works and conduct lab experiments by himself. By the end, he had contributed to 2 of our research projects on improving stem cell analysis technologies’ efficiency, co-authored 1 research paper and joined 1 national conference on stem cell. I am very happy with his results and can see that he can go far in the future. I encouraged him to study PhD in the UK in the program I did previously as he furthers his study in bio-med.

VINMEC RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Biology Internship Host ,Hanoi, Vietnam

Kaoru’s responsibility as an intern at Pan Pacific Hotel was to welcome and farewell the guest and takes care of our Japanese and VIP guest. As a hospitality student, Kaoru has a fair knowledge of the hospitality industry and soft skills necessary for the job like communication, team work, working under pressure. Due to the short duration of internship Kaoru hasn’t been able to keep up with everyone in the team. However, we was very glad to see that she showed profound interest in learning from our advice, training and abide very strictly to the rules of attendance and punctuality. We can say that the biggest strengths she brought to her internship in Vietnam are Team work, Enthusiasm, Hardworking and Punctuality. We would like to thank ABROADER Vietnam for an internship program that is beneficial not only to the intern but also to us as the host organization. We were able to have a more diverse manpower, our staff got to learn about a whole different culture and with Kaoru, our team became multi-cultural making it easier to engage and assist guests.
