Waves of internationalization in Vietnam
30 years ago, Vietnam was ranked among the poorest countries in the world. It was not until the late 1980s that Vietnam economy turned open for foreign investments - it is the benchmark for the process of internationalization in Vietnam, known as “Doi Moi” period with several changes in political and economic policies. The period mid-1990s witnessed the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US, which was followed by Vietnam being part of ASEAN and WTO. Vietnam signed a fairly comprehensive bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States in 2000, which came into force in 2001. The BTA was part of the post-war "trade normalisation" process between the two countries and should be seen as strong precursor to a watertight US FTA. These days, Vietnam is among the most dynamic economies in the region and an inviting destination for foreign investment community, which requires companies to compete domestically and internationally. Freer flows of goods, services and labor are promising but also demanding in the sense that companies now have to bring cultural competency to their staff and workplace.
In corporate levels, hiring international students working in your companies is an affordable and useful means of bringing multicultural working environment to your companies.
