Preparing both mentally and financially for a study abroad program is certainly not simple. However, there are also a ton of chances to make the dream of seeing the world a reality for many young people. One of these is applying for scholarships. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant that supports students with a limited budget to study or intern abroad. Furthermore, gaining skills critical to national security and economic competitiveness.
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to experience study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Award amounts range from US$100 to US$5,000. Given these points, our summer intern – Thanh Nguyen has successfully made her internship in Vietnam a cost-free internship with this scholarship. David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
Boren Scholarship is a grant for US students to study abroad in areas of the world. These places are critical to US interests in studying abroad. Basically Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Applicants must commit to working in the federal government upon graduation. The scholarship will award chosen ones a maximum of US$8,000 for summer programs. Besides, US$10,000 for semester programs, and US$20,000 for programs lasting between 6 to 12 months.
Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)
With a desire to make life-changing international experiences obtainable, not only to community colleges but to first-generation college students, Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) provides “scholarships and ongoing support to students who are in minority among the US study abroad population.” Scholarships range from US$1,250 to US$10,000. And programs have to run for at least 28 days.
Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship
Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is open to most students currently enrolled full-time at a four-year, degree-granting US college or university. Applicants must be pursuing their undergraduate degree, as well as be in good standing at their home organization. Additionally, they have applied to OR and have been accepted into a credit-bearing semester-long study abroad program.
The award includes US$1,000 and one Tortuga travel pack.
Foundation for Asia Pacific Education (FAPE)
Following, the Foundation for Asia Pacific Education is an NGO aiming at creating global citizens and leaders by assisting students in reaching their personal and professional goals of obtaining cultural and academic experiences within the Asia Pacific region. Award amounts vary however will range from US$500 to US$1500.
AAIF Youth Leadership Scholarship
In general, AAIF is open to US undergraduates whose devotion to community service, selfless acts of care, and interest in improving the quality of life for others reflect the life of the Awards’ namesake.
The Foundation will award a maximum of three USD $1,000 individual prizes in 2020.
The Diverse International Women Of Color (DIWC) Scholarship
Another one is the Diverse International Women Of Color Study Abroad Scholarship. It was found to assist women of color. They should be exceptional in their studies, besides in need of financial assistance to study abroad. DIWC will award $500 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to an In-Person Summer 2022 Study Abroad Program.

Christianson Fellowship
The InterExchange Foundation Christianson Fellowship awards up to $10,000 in scholarships to young US students who are both passionate about helping communities abroad thrive and are eager to learn about the local culture. Fellows identify a project or an organization working on an issue they care about, and with the support of the Christianson Fellowship, contribute their skills and passion to that effort for at least six months on location abroad. This global experience is a meaningful way to help others, improve skills, and gain insight into another culture.
Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Program
The Overseas Ambassador Program is created for current students or recent graduates who are planning to study, intern, volunteer, or teach abroad. Overseas Ambassadors earn a stipend in return for representing Diversity Abroad, writing articles, and sharing experiences while abroad. Geared toward economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, and ethnically and racially diverse students. Diversity Abroad, in collaboration with the AIFS, will offer a $500 stipend for fall and spring (five grants are available for both semesters) and two $500 stipends for the summer term. Hostelling International Explore the World Scholarship
US students can receive $2,000 in scholarships to help finance their international trip which includes an educational or service part. To qualify, applicants must: be 18-30 years old; be U.S. citizens or permanent citizens; have proven financial need; reside or attend school in one of the 13 urban areas where HI USA has a community presence; be planning an upcoming international trip that involves an educational and/or volunteer service component.
Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
This scholarship provides opportunities for American college and university students to study languages and cultures necessary to America’s engagement with the world.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program
This program creates connections in a diversely changing world. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers distinctive opportunities in all academic disciplines to graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.
Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program
The English Teaching Assistant places recent college graduates in classrooms in 75 countries to help teach English while serving as cultural ambassadors. The age and academic level of the students vary by country. Each participant can apply to only one country.
The Language Flagship
This program offers scholarships at 22 universities and colleges for US students together with overseas study opportunities at ten Flagship Overseas Centers.
Project GO
Project Go is a nationwide program open to all eligible ROTC students offering fully-funded opportunities in critical language education, abroad study, and cross-cultural experience. Through Project GO, future military officers develop linguistic and cross-cultural communication skills required for effective leadership for all Services in the 21st-century operational environment.
Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program
This program provides opportunities and grants for doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of 6-12 months. Grants are given in all world areas except Western Europe as the program aims to encourage the study of regions and cultures that are not commonly explored.
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
Providing opportunities for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to engage in area studies and world language training at schools, FLAS delivers distributions of fellowships to institutions of higher education, which then make awards directly to deserving undergraduate students and graduate students. Students must be enrolled at and apply through a FLAS-recipient institution.
