If you’re an international student embarking on a one-month internship adventure in the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. This bustling metropolis is known for its rich culture, delicious street food, and a dynamic atmosphere. However, navigating a new city can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re on a tight budget. But fear not! We’ve got you covered with some easy and cost-effective ways to get around this fantastic city.

Public Bus – A Budget-friendly Option

Ho Chi Minh City boasts an extensive network of public buses that covers nearly every corner of the city. The buses are easily recognizable with their bright colors and route numbers displayed in both English and Vietnamese. These buses are a cost-effective way to travel and offer a glimpse into the daily life of the city’s residents. Besides, don’t hesitate to ask locals for guidance. Vietnamese people are generally helpful and friendly, and they may guide you to the right bus stop or offer advice on the best route.

  • Tickets can be purchased directly from the bus driver. The fare is incredibly affordable, usually ranging from 5,000 VND to 10,000 VND (roughly 20 to 40 cents in USD) per journey. Make sure to bring small denominations of Vietnamese dong, as the drivers might not have change for larger bills.

Ride-Sharing Apps:

Apps like Grab, Gojek and Be have become increasingly popular in Ho Chi Minh City. They offer a convenient and budget-friendly means of transportation. Simply download the app, enter your destination, and you’ll have a ride at your doorstep in no time.

In essence, all you need to do is download the Grab app. Once you’re connected, you can view available cars and drivers in real-time on a map. Set your pickup and drop-off locations, and the closest driver will come to pick you up. The entire journey is traceable through GPS. Payment options include cash or credit card, and the best part is that you’ll know the fare in advance, even before starting your ride. This use of cutting-edge technology for taxi services also helps prevent taxi drivers from taking advantage of tourists, a long-standing concern in the city.

Note: Your insurance cover does not include Scooters and Motorbikes. Be wise to book your journey!

Hail a taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout the city and offer a comfortable means of transportation. Opt for reputable taxi companies like Vinasun or Mai Linh, and ensure that the meter is running to ensure fair pricing.

  • Mai Linh Taxi Hotline: 028.38.38.38.38
  • Vinasun Taxi Hotline: 028.38.27.27.27
